Creative Careers

The Creative Careers Program for Semester Two consists of three cohorts of students–youth focusing on music, youth focusing on illustration/graphic design and youth focusing on podcast video development. Students, grades 6 – 12, sign up for either music, graphic design or video development classes that are offered in-person on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. In addition, DOLC will continue to provide additional support to our youth with various special needs and learning abilities. In each cohort, when the students enter the program, they set their own personal project goal that they continue to work on throughout the semester(s). In all classes, youth focus on areas that are of concern to him/her (relationships, drug prevention, college, diversity, etc.) and then construct a creative piece that critically expounds on these concerns. Through the development of their own piece, the students often provide their own solutions to the concerns they have decided to write about. Students work on a variety of projects throughout the year and delve into many different subjects, guided by the instructors. Every year, we focus heavily on diversity appreciation and understanding by participating in a variety of community events, such as Pride for AHA!, along with encouraging the youth to write in multiple languages and to have discussions with a focus on diversity appreciation and inclusion.
